Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires providers and deployers of AI to take measures supporting the AI literacy of people who work with AI on their behalf. It prescribes no format, certificate or exam. Is AI training mandatory for employees?
Measures supporting AI literacy are mandatory, a specific course is not.
- the measures take into account people's knowledge, experience and the context in which AI is used (Article 4 as amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744)
- the Commission warns that relying on instructions for use, or asking staff to read them, may not be enough
- training with records is the simplest way to show the measures

FAQ
What clients ask us
Yes. Article 4 does not say who must train, and according to the European Commission no certificate is needed. The free plan includes a syllabus per group and a record template, so you can also run the training yourselves.
The AI Act sets no specific fine for Article 4. The Commission says national authorities may sanction infringements under national law.
The Act sets no interval. Train new hires when they start and refresh when you add an AI tool or change your rules.
